After the success of the When They Cry series — Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Umineko no Naku Koro ni — and his side project, Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni, Ryukishi 07 is taking a break from writing horror stories and is now working on his next project. Rose Guns Days is a story set in a post-World War II Japan where, instead of surrendering to the US, it was rendered powerless by a natural disaster and was occupied by both China and the US.

Contrary to his previous works, the art this time around looks more promising; 07th expansion has hired three new artists to work on the character designs. From the preview and the available information on the website (translations of the text can be found on this thread at AnimeSuki), Ryukishi seems to be going for a Baccano!-style story filled with the mafia’s guns and roses. It seems that it will also take place in two settings a la Umineko: 1940’s Japan and 21st-century Japan.

It’s certainly an intriguing piece of news; one has to wonder how Ryukishi will handle writing in a totally different genre and setting than what he’s known for. And after Umineko’s heavy experimentation with metafictional devices, I have to wonder how he’ll handle the metafiction in his new VN. As a fan of the When They Cry series, I’m definitely looking forward to how Ryukishi’s new work will turn out.
